First-Time Guide to Lisbon: What to Know Before You Go
Oh, Lisbon! Just the name brings a smile to my face, recalling those vibrant, sun-drenched days we spent exploring its charming streets as a family. When we first started thinking about a city break that would delight both the grown-ups and the little ones, Lisbon kept popping up on our radar. And I’m so glad it did! It’s a city that truly has a little bit of everything: history whispering from every corner, food that makes your heart sing, and views that steal your breath away, even from the top of a tram.
Planning a trip with two energetic children means I leave no stone unturned, and Lisbon certainly offered its unique set of considerations. Those famous hilly, sun-washed streets are absolutely picturesque, with their pastel tiled buildings, but they do require a bit of strategic planning, especially with small legs in tow! We learned so much on our journey, and I’m so excited to share all my best tips and tricks with you, so your first family adventure in Lisbon is as smooth and joyful as ours was. Let’s make sure you’re fully prepared to embrace all the magic this wonderful city has to offer!
Do’s
- Do embrace comfortable shoes (for everyone!). I cannot stress this enough, darling! Lisbon is a city of hills and cobbled streets, and while utterly charming, they can be tough on tired feet. Pack supportive, broken-in walking shoes for yourself and sturdy sneakers for the kids. Trust me, happy feet mean happy explorers, and you’ll be doing a lot of exploring!
- Do utilize public transport. Lisbon’s iconic yellow trams, funiculars, and the metro are not just practical; they’re an experience in themselves! They’re a lifesaver for navigating those steep inclines, especially when little legs are weary. Consider getting a Viva Viagem card for easy top-ups, which makes hopping on and off a breeze. The historic Tram 28 offers a lovely, albeit sometimes crowded, tour of the city. We found it best to ride it early in the morning for a more relaxed journey.
- Do indulge in the local treats. You simply cannot visit Lisbon without trying the famous pastéis de nata! These glorious custard tarts are a taste of heaven and an absolute must-try for every family member. Seek out a local pasteleria – the kids will love watching them being made, and the adults will love pairing them with a strong Portuguese coffee. They make for wonderful, energy-boosting pit stops!
- Do explore different neighborhoods at a gentle pace. Lisbon is a patchwork of distinct areas, each with its own character. From the historic alleys of Alfama and the grand squares of Baixa to the bohemian vibe of Bairro Alto, give yourselves time to wander without rushing. Build in plenty of breaks for playground stops or simply sitting at a café to watch the world go by. We found that choosing just one main area to explore each day helped avoid overtired meltdowns.
- Do make dinner reservations. While many restaurants are happy to accommodate walk-ins, popular spots, especially those with outdoor seating or a great view, fill up quickly. If you have a specific family-friendly restaurant in mind, or if you’re traveling during peak season, a reservation can save you from hungry disappointments and weary searches, ensuring a smoother evening for everyone.
- Do keep an eye on your belongings. Like any bustling city, it’s wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded tourist areas or on public transport. Keep your valuables secure and out of sight, and try to blend in. A cross-body bag or a money belt can offer peace of mind, allowing you to focus on enjoying your family time.
Don’ts
- Don’t try to see everything in one day. Lisbon is far too beautiful and rich to be rushed. Resist the urge to pack your itinerary too tightly. Over-scheduling is a recipe for exhaustion, especially with children. Instead, pick a few key sights for each day and allow ample time for spontaneous discoveries, breaks, and changes of plan. Remember, it’s a holiday, not a race!
- Don’t forget sun protection. Lisbon is famously sun-kissed, which is wonderful, but it also means the sun can be intense. Always carry hats, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen for the entire family, even on seemingly cloudy days. Hydration is key too, so keep water bottles filled!
- Don’t shy away from trying the local seafood. Portugal is famous for its fresh seafood, and Lisbon is no exception. From grilled sardines (especially in summer!) to bacalhau (codfish) prepared in countless ways, there’s a whole world of deliciousness waiting. Even if your kids are picky, you might be surprised by what they enjoy when presented with such fresh, simple flavors.
- Don’t neglect to look up. While you’ll be busy navigating the streets and keeping an eye on your little ones, remember to periodically tilt your head skyward! Lisbon’s buildings are adorned with stunning, colorful tiles (azulejos), intricate ironwork, and charming balconies. These details tell a story and add so much character to the city – you won’t want to miss them!
- Don’t underestimate the power of a mid-day rest. Especially if you’re battling jet lag or just need a breather from all the walking, heading back to your accommodation for an hour or two of quiet time, or finding a lovely park bench to simply sit and relax, can make all the difference to everyone’s mood and energy levels for the afternoon adventures.
- Don’t assume everyone speaks English. While many people in the tourism industry speak English very well, especially younger generations, a few basic Portuguese phrases (“Olá” – Hello, “Obrigado/a” – Thank you, “Por favor” – Please) go a long way. It’s a sign of respect and often results in warmer interactions. Plus, it’s fun for the kids to learn a new word or two!
Best Time to Experience This
From my experience, the sweet spot for visiting Lisbon, especially with family, is during the shoulder seasons: **March to May or September to October**. During these months, the weather is wonderfully pleasant – not too hot for all that walking and exploring, but still beautifully sunny. You’ll avoid the intense heat and larger crowds of the summer high season, which, for a family, means shorter lines, more comfortable sightseeing, and generally a more relaxed pace.
The spring brings lovely blossoms and comfortable temperatures, while autumn offers mild, sunny days perfect for meandering through neighborhoods and enjoying outdoor cafes. The light at these times of year is simply magical, too, making those pastel tiled buildings glow and giving you stunning photos to cherish.
Local Tips
- Seek out the Miradouros: Lisbon is famous for its “miradouros,” or viewpoints. Many are accessible by tram or funicular, making them perfect spots for a family photo op and a moment to simply take in the breathtaking views across the city’s red roofs and the Tagus River. Miradouro de Santa Luzia in Alfama is one of our favorites, offering shade and often live music.
- Discover Kid-Friendly Parks: Keep an eye out for playgrounds and green spaces! Parque Eduardo VII is a grand, formal park with wonderful views, but also look for smaller, local parks where kids can burn off some energy. Jardim da Estrela, near the Basilica da Estrela, is a charming spot with a playground, ducks, and often weekend markets.
- Embrace the “Elevadores”: Lisbon has several historic lifts and funiculars that are not just transport but attractions. The Santa Justa Lift offers incredible views, but the Ascensor da Bica or Ascensor da Glória are just as charming and often less crowded, giving the kids a fun ride up those steep streets.
- Dine Early: While many Portuguese families dine quite late, with kids, it often helps to aim for an earlier dinner, around 7:00 PM or 7:30 PM. Many restaurants are happy to accommodate, and it means you can avoid the busiest rush and get the little ones tucked into bed at a reasonable hour, ready for the next day’s adventures.
Summary
Lisbon is truly a gem, a city that captures your heart with its vibrant colors, delicious flavors, and friendly atmosphere. It’s a destination that, with a little thoughtful planning, offers a wonderful family adventure, creating memories that will last a lifetime. From navigating its charming hills to savoring those divine custard tarts, every moment in Lisbon is an opportunity for discovery. I hope these tips from our family to yours help you feel confident and excited as you embark on your own Portuguese journey!
